Meet the Team
Landscape Program Manager
Rose’s current role encompasses program oversight, projects and grants management, partner communications, and staff development. She has over ten years of project and grants management experience, and five years of program management. She is bilingual in Spanish and English and has a deep commitment to social justice and labor justice.
Rose grew up in Portland, is an alumni of Portland Community College and Portland State University and has been involved in the region’s community building, public health, and environmental fields.
She has interned and volunteered with Metro, Friends of Trees, PCUN, and habitat restoration organizations. Rose also runs a small sustainable farm that centers on CSA (community supported agriculture) and a landscape business with a specialization in native plants and water conservation.
Landscape Program Coordinator
As Verde’s Landscape Program Coordinator, Carlina is the training liaison for the Landscape Crew Member’s training program. She works with Verde staff and other partners to develop effective training, recruitment and hiring pathways for the crew. She also provides administrative support to the Verde Landscape Program Manager. Carlina grew up in Chicago, attended college in rural Iowa, and moved to Portland in 2016 to experience the great city and the natural and dynamic beauty the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Since moving to Portland, she has ran public health and environmental campaigns through OSPIRG and Environment Oregon, and has worked with Ecotrust’s Food and Farm team on a regional food systems project. She is really excited to work at the intersection of environmental sustainability and social equity through her work at Verde Landscape.
Landscape Crew Supervisor
Mateo Fletes was born and grew up in Nayarit, Mexico. In 2003 he moved to Oregon and attended High School. Soon after, he worked in the construction field. In 2008 he joined Verde. He likes working at Verde because he is learning new techniques to protect the environment. In his free time, he likes to play soccer and play the guitar. He wants to learn more about construction and landscaping and eventually start his own business.
Landscape Crew Lead
Antonio Rojas is from Guanajuato, Mexico. Lived in Garden City Kansas for 13 years prior to moving to Oregon in 2008 in search of a better job opportunity in a field he enjoyed which is landscape. His quest for the right job was hectic till he found it when he came to work for Verde doing what he enjoys, landscape. In his free time he volunteers as a health promoter for Providence Hospital, Catholic Charities, Programa Hispano and other organizations. He also likes to play soccer and growing vegetables in his garden.
Landscape Crew Lead
Karen is from Merida in Yucatan, Mexico. She has been working for Verde for seven months after she found this opportunity through a friend. Karen has previous work experience working at restaurants as a cook. Karen loves how much she gets to learn through the variety of projects Verde Landscape offers. She enjoys working with nature, trees, and greenspaces generally and loves creating and constructing landscapes. In her free time, Karen likes to walk around in parks and nature and listen to all kinds of music, including banda and rancheras.
Landscape Crew Lead
Rafael is from Oaxaca, Mexico. He participated in Verde’s Lideres Verdes program in 2011, and applied to work at Verde Landscape after hearing about the crew member openings in January of 2018. Rafael has always really like landscaping. He has two years of prior experience in landscape and construction. With Verde Landscape, Rafael especially enjoys installing raingardens, because they are a sustainable and innovative way to maintain good water quality. On the weekends, Rafael likes to watch moves with his family and spend time playing with his children.
Samuel is from Veracruz, Mexico. Born in the rural countryside of Mexico, Samuel loves how his job at Verde allows him to connect to the outdoors. He came to Verde in 2008 through Hacienda CDC where Verde Executive Director Alan recruited him for the program. In his free time, Samuel does odd jobs with his friends throughout Portland, including landscaping and construction. He spends Sundays resting at home, preparing for the week ahead.
Rosa Flores was born in Puebla, Mexico and grew up in Mexico City. She was involved in Verde Outreach activities since she moved to Portland, and when she heard that Verde Landscape was looking specifically for women crew members, she decided to apply. She has experience previously in construction when she worked in Mexico City and has spent time working as a wedding dress seamstress and cleaning at hotels. Rosa has been at Verde since October 2016. She is passionate about the work, especially building rain gardens. In her free time, Rosa likes to spend time with her kids in nature, including the forests and rivers.
